Competition team

95% of our members are coming in to better themselves and have no interest in being competitive athletes.  We do however have options for athletes wanting to compete in CrossFit. Here is a little bio on our competition team and our competition history.

The team came together in the fall of 2013, and competed in the CrossFit Open for the first time in 2014. Qualifying for the North Central Regionals in 2014, the team finished in 1st place which qualified for a spot at the CrossFit Games at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.  Once the team got to the CrossFit Games they took 1st place in 2 events including the final event to come in at in 4th place overall. Returning once again to the 2015 CrossFit Regionals, The team had bad run of luck with injuries and mistakes at the 2015 Regionals and just missed qualifying for the games. At the 2016 Regionals they managed to come back and take a qualifying spot again at the games and once again headed out to Carson, California to compete in the games. 2017 brings another year with a lot of fresh new faces as they head off to Regionals for another shot at qualifying for the CrossFit Games.

Height: 5’4″
Weight: 140lbs
Team Member: 2017

Occupation: CrossFit coach and athlete

Born and raised in Pittston, Pennsylvania. At the age of 8, I began playing ice hockey at my local rink. I loved all sports but hockey stuck with me for life. I played D-I ice hockey for The Ohio State University from 2009-2013 where I graduated with a B.S. in Education & Human Ecology. Elected as assistant captain both junior and senior year. Being nominated for the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award (2013) & Seventh Player Award (2011) are two of the biggest highlights during my career.

Prior to CrossFit I dabbled in the sport of powerlifting. I competed at USAPL Raw Nationals in 2015 where I finished 18th of 55 women in the 72kg weight class.

I began CrossFit in January of 2015 at CrossFit Vertex and completed my first Open “just for fun”. Exactly one year later, I received my Level 1 Certification (CF-L1) and began coaching at CFV. I qualified for Regionals in 2016 after placing 462nd worldwide and 29th in my region. I finished Regionals 14th of 39 talented women.

2017 has brought a whole new twist to my CrossFit journey. I have relocated from PA to MN to train under Timberwolf CrossFit and be apart of their team. I finished this year’s Open 78th worldwide and 13th in our region (both 384th & 16th place improvements from 2016). As a team, we finished 9th in the world and 2nd in our region. I look forward to what the rest of what this 2017 season will bring

Anthony Davis (AJ) –

Age:22
Height: 5’9″
Weight: 205-215
Team Member: 2017

Occupation: CrossFit coach/USAW sports performance coach

Background:
I was born in Key West, Florida (Fun Fact) after 8 years of living there I wound up in Plainwell, MI. I played just about every sport growing up. From age 3-18 I played: Football, basketball, Golf (4 year varsity), soccer, rollerhockey, baseball, and even dabbled in some action sports like snowboarding and skateboarding. I would say the peak of my athletic career growing up was Ping Pong champ of my friends garage for 4 weekends in a row. After High School I found myself sort of lost, not playing any sports and separating myself from friends. After 1 semester of college, almost leaving I ended up joining the GVSU Strength club where I was introduced to CrossFit. That following summer I joined a box, CrossFit Lake Effect, In Holland, MI. Over the years I developed from a normal class attendee to training as much as I was in class and also began coaching. In 2014, my first Open I was 25,000 something in the world. Over the year I have made big jumps, 2015: 1600 something, 2016: 183 and individual regional qualifier, to 5th in the world and winner of the North Central in 2017. For the 2017 season, I have forgone being individual for a year and moved to Saint Paul, MN to join the TimberWolf CrossFit team in hopes of making a run at the CrossFit games. I love this sport and being apart of this amazing community.

DJ Hiller –

Height: 5’10”
Weight: 185lbs
Team member: 2015 – 2016

Occupation: Personal Trainer

Background:
I’ve always been into fitness, I loved learning about working out and finding new ways to get in better shape. I played high school and college football and found myself loving the offseason weight training program just as much as I enjoyed actually playing the sport. After my sophomore year of football I walked away and quickly discovered CrossFit in my hometown of Lakeville, MN. I was very fortunate to run into a guy by the name of Matt Strand who pulled me in on a classic CrossFit triplet workout. After somewhat keeping up with Matt, he was quick to tell me that I am welcome here anytime and he expects me to be back tomorrow. I fell in love with the sport immediately and it fueled my competitive spirit. It seemed like the best of both worlds that I got to workout and also be competitive with it at the same time. I am almost two years into CF and I love every part of it. It was become a huge part of my life not only as an athlete but a coach and personal trainer.
